Frankfurt Airport (or Flughafen Frankfurt am Main in German) is the entry point to Germany for many tourists. It is situated on more than 5,000 acres and offers extensive services to travelers. 

It is Germany’s most crowded airport. It also ranks among the top ten busiest airports worldwide. This is due to its status as a hub for Lufthansa and Condor. Also, it serves as a major point of departure and transfer for international and domestic travel. What Do You Need Before You Go 

Frankfurt Airport is much more than an airport. It is a huge complex that houses a shopping center and The Squaire Germany’s largest office building. Two Hilton hotels are also located here. It is easily accessible from the airport, and can be connected to Terminal 1 by a pedestrian walkway. 

Two terminals are located at the airport, with a smaller First-Class Terminal that is used only by Lufthansa. Terminal 1 is the older, more spacious terminal and houses concourses A through Z. It is divided into three levels, with departures at the top, arrivals, baggage claim, and transport below. Non-Schengen flight depart from the Z gates, while Schengen flights depart at the A gates. Terminal 2 houses Concourses E and D. The newer terminal is located at the Z gates. Schengen flights depart from the A gates. You can travel between terminals by taking the Skyline shuttle train, which takes about 2 minutes. 

Airport Parking 

Frankfurt Airport offers more than 15,000 parking spots. However, you will need to pre-book your space on the airport website. You must pay at least one day. Shuttles that run every 20 min to Terminals 1 or 2 are free and available from this location. 

You can also take advantage of Park and Sleep & Fly deals in Terminal 1 at Intercity or Sheraton hotels. These deals include 15 days of free parking if you stay at least one night at either hotel. 

Driving Directions 

The Autobahn connects Frankfurt Airport to Frankfurter Kreuz, where two busy motorways A3 and A5 intersect. The signs in German and English indicate the route to the airport as well as the various areas. 

Public Transportation and Taxis

You can also take the subway lines S8 or S9 into Frankfurt’s center in approximately 15 minutes, or to Frankfurt’s central station in about 10 minutes. 

Terminal 1 is just a few steps away from the Airport Long Distance Railway Station. This station has high-speed intercity trains that depart in every direction. Check in at the station to check in for approximately 60 airlines. 

Public buses transport passengers between Frankfurt Airport, the Frankfurt city centre, Schwanheim, Darmstadt, and Darmstadt. Companies like FlixBus or BlaBlaBus offer long-distance bus services that connect you with cities throughout Germany and Europe.

Where to Eat & Drink 

The Squaire is a great place to eat near Frankfurt Airport. The jumbo-sized building houses a number of excellent restaurants and bars, including Paulaner in Squaire, Thong Thai and Flavors. 

You can find fast food options near your gate such as Deli Bros and McDonald’s. But you also have the option to enjoy a sit-down meal or a drink at the bar at popular spots like Haussman’s and Kafer’s. You can grab a smoothie from Goodmann & Filippo, an Italian-American deli, or a snack at Natural Shop in Terminal 1. 

Where to Buy 

You can shop till you drop at Frankfurt Airport with hundreds of luxury and niche brands. It’s possible to purchase everything from Rubik’s Cubes to Rolexes. 

You’ll find luxury brands such as Hugo Boss and Versace in Terminal 1. You’ll also find souvenir shops, convenience stores, and even a store for cameras. Caviar House or Prunier can be visited if you are celebrating a significant business deal, or if you just want to feel fancy. They sell champagne, caviar and accessories such as gold-plated caviar spoons. Outdoor retailers such as Jack Wolfskin and Geox are great options if you’re looking for adventure.

How to spend your layover 

If you are looking to make the most out of your short time at Frankfurt Airport, there is plenty to do. You can shop or take one of the Airport Experience Tours that will take you behind-the scenes of this huge airport. In Terminal 1, you can also enjoy a movie with your travel companions, or even play video games. You might need to take a break and shower before you board your flight. You can book private rooms at the My Cloud Transit Hotel located in Terminal 1. 

You’ll find even more things to do when you leave the terminal. This means that you will have to go through security again on your return. You can take public transport into Frankfurt, if you have the time. There you will find the reconstructed Old Town which recreates the area that was lost during World War II. 

You don’t have to go too far from the airport. There are two options for entertainment in the vicinity of the airport: the Squaire shopping center or the airport itself. The shopping mall has a grocery shop, casino and a hair salon. All this before you go through security. You can even rent a conference room for business travelers if you need to squeeze in a quick meeting. 

There are plenty of hotels close to the airport that can provide you with restful sleep, whether you’re on an overnight stay or a morning flight. Welcome Lounge 

This lounge is available to all Frankfurt Airport passengers arriving from outside Europe. 

The entry fee to the lounge is 78 US dollars. The lounge is open from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. It can be accessed at Terminal 1 Landside, Arrival Area B, near baggage claim. 

Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge 

This lounge is available to members of Air Canada and Economy passengers. 

To gain access to the lounge, you will need to be a member of Air Canada for an annual period. The lounge is open 2 hours before Air Canada’s first flight departs and 30 minutes before the end of the night. The lounge is located in Terminal 1 on the third floor, in Concourse B. 

Sky Lounge 

Economy passengers can use this lounge if they have booked their lounge passes in advance, or if they are members of Priority Pass (a lounge access program). If a room becomes available, you can also purchase entry at the door. 

Three hours of lounge time are available for purchase at 36.65 USD. The lounge is open daily between 6:45 and 9:00 p.m. You can find it airside at Terminal 2, Concourse D, on the third floor opposite Gate D8. 

Air France Lounge 

This lounge is available to economy passengers traveling to countries within the Schengen Zone. 

This lounge is available to members of Priority Pass, or for 36.65 USD per hour, if space permits. Hours are from 5:45 to 8:15 p.m. every day. It is located on the airside of Terminal 2 at Hall D, Schengen Area, opposite Gate D26. 

Prime Class Lounge 

Priority Passes are available for Economy Passholders. You can also purchase a lounge pass online. 

The cost of an online pass to this lounge is 32.73 USD. The lounge is open daily from 6:00 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. You will find the entrance in Terminal 2 Airside Concourse E in the non-Schengen area close to Gate E7. 

Lufthansa Business Lounge 

Lufthansa has multiple business lounges throughout FRA. These lounges can be accessed by purchasing an online pass. 

These lounges have a 67 USD entrance fee. They are open daily between 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The first location is located in Terminal 1 Airside Concourse B, close to Gate B44/B48. The second location is within the same terminal and concourse, but near Gate B24/B28. 

Lufthansa Senator Lounge 

Economy passengers arriving from either terminal can use this lounge, provided they are not departing on non-Schengen flight. 

This lounge is available for 67 USD. Children under 2 years old get in free. It is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. You can find it in Terminal 1, Concourse C near Gate C14 or C15. 

LuxxLounge 

Priority Pass, pre-purchased lounge pass or door passes can be used to access the lounge. However, this is only available if there is room. This lounge is located on the land side, so you will need to pass through security again before you can head to your gate. 

If you order online in advance, the cost of this pass is 32.73 USD. Door passes cost 34.37 USD per hour and 57.29 US dollars for the entire day. Lounge hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. every day. The location is Terminal 1 landside at Departure Hall B/C. Follow the escalators up from the check-in counter 680. 

Premium Traveler Lounge 

This lounge is also known by the Iberia VIP Lounge. This lounge is available to Priority Pass holders or online purchasers of lounge passes. 

The online passes to this lounge cost 32.73 USD. It is open from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The lounge can be found in Terminal 2’s Concourse D, on the second floor near Gate 26. 

Frankfurt Airport Wi-Fi Access and Work Areas 

You may have been to many airports, and you might have found yourself in an area without Wi-Fi. This can lead to a frustrating stopover. FRA will never have this problem. 

FRA provides unlimited, free Wi-Fi. More than 300 access points are scattered throughout the facility. Most of them are in the departure areas. Log in to “Frankfort-Airport” and enter your email address. 

You might want to set up an account if you regularly travel through FRA. This will enable your device to connect automatically whenever you land at the airport.

• There is a medical facility located in Terminal 1 Arrivals and three pharmacies if you are feeling unwell.
